Lo speciale design a 5 pale del Q-Prop assicura che ci sia sempre una parte di una pala dell'elica che "copre" il profilo visibile del piede del thruster. Prima che la pala dell'elica superi il profilo del piede, la metà inferiore della pala successiva arriva in posizione a coprire il profilo stesso. Con le tradizionali eliche a 4 pale si formava invece un impulso d'acqua che colpiva il piede elica ogni volta che lo spazio tra le 4 pale lasciava scoperto il piede del thruster. Questo creava rumore e cavitazione.
